Spray Foam Insulation
Spray foam insulation is a common type of insulation used in homes because it can be installed quickly and easily. Spray foam insulation, also called “foam-in-place” insulation, expands up to 100 times its original volume when you apply it, so you need less material than other types. It works great for places like the attic, basement, and crawl space where you want to fill gaps around pipes and wires.
It has an R-value of 13 and a density of about 0.07 pounds per cubic foot, which is less than fiberglass insulation but more than cellulose insulation.
Spray foam can’t be used in wet areas because it prevents water from getting into the material like traditional types of insulation do. One common risk with spray foam installation is that if you don’t follow instructions, it can cause air leaks, which will make your home less energy efficient.
Fiberglass batts come in rolls and are typically installed between wall studs. It has an R-value of 14, which means it’s a common insulation material for walls because it provides good protection against heat loss through the exterior walls but not so great at keeping cold air out in the winter months. The downsides to fiberglass insulation are that it requires regular upkeep and replacing the material every 15 to 20 years.
The most commonly used insulation materials for a basement are fiberglass batts, but this is a terrible thing to do. Spray foam and rigid foam are better used with care taken not to use in wet areas because of their waterproof nature.
Cellulose insulation can be found in the form of loose-fill or blown-in. Loose-fill cellulose is common for attics and crawl spaces, while blown-in celluloses are common insulations used on exterior walls and basement areas. Cellulose has an R-value of about three, which means it’s a good choice for places that don’t get cold.
Cellulose insulations are made from recycled paper, and they have low levels of fire risk because of their natural flame-resistant properties common to the original fibers in cardboard. Cellulose does not conduct heat as well, which means it’s appropriate for climates where you need to keep cool air inside rather than letting it escape. h
Rigid Foam Insulation
Rigid foam insulation is standard for exterior walls. Rigid foams are made from polyurethane or polystyrene, and they offer good thermal resistance because of their insulating properties. The downside to rigid foam insulation is that it does not provide as much soundproofing, which can be beneficial in some situations but not in all instances.
It is excellent for exterior walls because it does not have a strong odor like some other common types of insulation and is also very lightweight.
